A note of ye names and armes of the fyve conquerors of this famous Island called Englande ... : manuscript written and illuminated in England, 17th cent.

Emblazoned arms of British rulers and nobles, in chronological order, from Brute the son of Silvius Posthumus through James I. Each entry features a shield painted with arms, a short account of the bearer's entry into England, notable achievements, famous ancestors or descendants, and investiture into peerage (secretary hand); and a blazon (italic hand). Monarchs' arms represented larger than others', centered on page, without descriptions. Also contains a partial (Arundel-Lancaster) index of 10 pages preceding the text, titled "Alphabeticall Catalogue of the English-created-Earles since the Norman Conquest" (p.i-x); this later indexer has annotated several shields throughout the volume with the names of their Earldoms.
